How can someone get on the program?


Anyone can make a referral by calling the Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ office at (806)792-7971. Office hours are 8:00a.m.-4:30p.m., Monday-Friday.  You can also complete our online client application at CLIENT APPLICATION.

What are the eligibility guidelines?


The Board of Directors has established three criteria that all applicants must meet before they can receive meals:

  1. A person must be homebound or need assistance to leave home.
  2. A person must be unable to prepare a well-balanced meal each day.
  3. A person must not have anyone who is available to prepare meals for him or her*

*Some exceptions may apply

Initial information will be taken by phone. Final eligibility will be determined during a home visit and assessment.

Is there a fee for service?


During the enrollment process you will be asked if you would like to contribute to help offset the cost of your meal. Monthly reminders are sent reminding our clients that they can donate if they wish.  No one is denied service due to an inability to contribute.

Who delivers the meals?


Lubbock Meals on Wheels depends on the help of caring volunteers to deliver meals to recipients. All volunteers are required to pass a criminal background check and attend an orientation. . Volunteers use their own vehicles and pay for their own gasoline.

What kinds of meals are prepared?


Each meal hot lunch contains:

  • An entrée
  • Two sides
  • Bread and/or Dessert

Our meals are not highly seasoned.

We also provide:

  • Sugar-free desserts
  • Soft diets
  • Bland diets
  • Vegetarian diets

We also deliver breakfast:

  • Breakfast is delivered Monday, Wednesday, & Friday along with the hot lunch.
  • Everyone on the program is eligible to receive breakfast.
  • There are no special breakfast diets.

 


Who cooks the food?


Meals are prepared and packaged in our kitchen with care. Early each weekday morning, experienced cooks work very hard to ensure that your food is prepared to perfection. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our kitchen and the quality of our meals.

What is the service area?


Lubbock Meals on Wheels delivers meals inside the Lubbock and Wolfforth city limits.

Are meals delivered on holidays, weekends, or during bad weather?


Lubbock Meals on Wheels is closed on the following holidays. Extra food and fresh fruit are sent out prior to a holiday closing.

  • New Year’s Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • 4th of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving (2 days)
  • Christmas (2-3 days)

An emergency meal box, containing enough shelf stable food items to cover two meals, is distributed to all clients.  A new emergency meal box is sent out each fall to ensure that the meals have not expired. In the event that conditions prohibit regular hot meal delivery, Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ clients will be instructed to use one of their emergency meal via television, radio, and social media.

550 weekend meals are provided weekly to clients who have no access to, or assistance with meals over the weekend.
